There is no denying that laboratory tests provide accurate detailed information with is reliable due to their controlled environments (MacDougall & Wenger, 1991). Through a number of tests, it allows you as coaches to build up a physical profile for each player which is important when monitoring and prescribing training (Svensson & Drust, 2005). However, due to the expensive nature of the facilities and equipment needed to perform these tests many clubs will be unable to perform these tests regular if at all. Therefore, the timing of these types of tests is important and in order to be cost effective practitioners would suggest using them in these conditions:
- Pre-Season: Gather baseline information for each player which can be referred back to throughout the season.
- Injury Rehabilitation: Gather accurate information on a player’s fitness to ensure no further damage could be done to the injury.
(Svensson & Drust, 2005).
What should my players be aiming for?
